1. Oh, the gospel is power from heaven,
To salvation from sin, for all those
Who believe God can do what He’s promised:
“In the desert shall blossom the rose.”
2. An accused woman stood before Jesus,
“Go your way, sin no more,” He replies.
This is more than mere legal forgiveness,
It is soul-cleansing pow’r from the skies.
3. He is able to keep us from falling,
And to make us without fault or blame.
In the sight of His holy commandments,
We can walk without spot, without stain.
4. Sin shall not have dominion upon us;
All its power is broken and dead.
We’ve a life that is greater and higher,
From the Seed that has bruised Satan’s head.
5. Then rejoice in this present salvation,
Thanks to God for the vict’ry within!
For the weakest believer in Jesus
Can now live ev’ry day without sin.

The inspiration for this song came from a study on the basic Gospel message that Fred Wright used to present, and which was later written up in the book, “From Bondage to Freedom,” also called Freedom from Sin.
Fred would reiterate to us the importance of learning the promises of victory and new life, and of meditating upon them until they “became ours” (ie. until we believed them and received from God the spiritual power that was in those words). He would usually recite from memory a half dozen promises from the Bible, and then encourage us to also look for others.
In this song, I’ve tried to put some of those basic promises together in a way that shows their unified message: that through the Gospel, Christ offers to give us a life and power that is stronger than the power of sin. It is a radical change. As Fred used to say, “we are not just people with new ideas, we are NEW people!”
The verses referred to in the song are:
“1. Oh, the gospel is power from heaven,”
Romans 1
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
“To salvation from sin, for all those”
Matthew 1
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
“Who believe God can do what He’s promised:”

11 …And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn you: go, and sin no more.
“This is more than mere legal forgiveness,”
Romans 8
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.
“It is soul-cleansing pow’r from the skies.”
Isaiah 55
10 For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and returns not there, but waters the earth, and makes it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11 So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
“3. He is able to keep us from falling,”
Jude 1
24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.
“And to make us without fault or blame.”
1 Thessalonians 5
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“In the sight of His holy commandments,”
